Laptop Kernel update. Seems like a success
I’ve been working, on and off, on an update to my Linux kernel, for the last few weeks. I’ve tried my best with 2.6.12.1 to 2.6.12.5, and although it was compiled correctly, it failed to boot. I don’t know why, but this same problem occurred on my desktop PC as well. Yesterday, finally, I was…
Dell PowerEdge 1800 and Linux – Part 1
As part of my voluntary actions, I manage and support Israeli Amateur Radio Committee Internet server. This machine is an old poor machine, custom made about 5-7 years ago, containing Pentium2 300MHz, and 256MB RAM. It serves few hundreds of users, and you can guess for yourself how slow and miserable this machine is. After…
NFS problems in failover – MC Service Guard. Applicable to other Linux HA clusters
Problem: Two Linux servers (RHEL4) running NFS Server in High-Availability (failover) mode. When failovering the resources, an NFS client can continue to work. When failing back, the NFS client times-out for 5+ minutes. Further problem information: While using RHEL3, that same (exact) configuration worked flawlessly. Solution: set NFS options to UDP instead of TCP. Explanation:…
Neighbors stealing your Internet connection?

Maybe I should try that too… Related posts: Stateless Systems (diskless, boot from net) on RHEL5/Centos5 XenServer get VM…
Power Consumption on a rack closet
We’ve had some issues with electricity going down on specific rack closets. We have a single 16A fuse for each closet. On some, the ones containing older Sun servers, about 12 servers were able to go into a rack closet, so we’ve had no issues with power consumptions. However, on a rack closet holding many…
Laptop Fujitsu P2120 Summary
Well, I have a laptop for the last 2 years or so, which can be noted for its very light-weight and enhanced setup (it comes with full equipment – DVD-CDR combo, 802.11b, 1xPCMCIA, 2xUSB2.0, 1xFireWire, S-Video, VGA Out, Lan, Modem, etc), for only 3.2 lbs, or ~1.5Kg. However it has its disadvantages – the weak…
